Champs 2026 | Hydel’s Hazel, Edwin’s Finnigan lead the way in 100m
The finals of the 100 metres in all classes will highlight today's second day of the 2026 ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletics Championships.
A lot of fireworks are expected in the 100 metres across the board following some quick times in yesterday's first-round action. The semi-finals and finals are on tonight.
In the girls' Class One 100 metres Shemonique Hazle of Hydel High found her best form this season to clock a wind-aided 11.44 seconds (+2.3) mps to emerge the fastest qualifier in the class. Penwood High's Shakaya Reid was next best winning her heat in a personal best 11.67. Edwin Allen's Reneica Edwards 11.78, race favourite Shanoya Douglas (11.85) of Holland High and Edwin Allen High's Alexxe Henry (11.94) are the top qualifiers.
Gianna Murray of Mount Alvernia High leads the way in Class Two with 11.69, ahead of St Jago's High's duo, Adora Campbell (11.74) and Shanna Campbell (11.75).
Convent of Mercy's Azarria Harris is the fastest semi-final qualifier in Class Three with 11.69 while Briana Gray of Excelsior High leads the way in Class Four with 12.27.
Kemanic Edwards of Kingston College (KC) is the leading qualifier among the Class Three boys. He won his heat in 11.06 with Joshua McWilliams of Wolmer's Boys second in 11.10 and J'den Fisher of St Jago, third in 11.15.
Marquies Page of St Jago leads the way in Class Two after clocking 10.47 to win his heat. Ricardo Mann of of Vere is next best with 10.57.
In Class One 18-year-old Romario Finnigan of Edwin Allen crossed the line in a fast 10.18. Next best was Johan-Ramaldo Smythe of Holland High with 10.24 while third fastest was Finnigan's teammate Kenrick Austin and Malike Nugent of Excelsior High. They both clocked 10.27.
On a day when most of the seeded athletes advanced to the next round of their events the two biggest disappointments were Edwin Allen's Aneka Lowe in the Class Three 1500m and KC's Omarian Miller in the Class One long jump.
Lowe who was sixth in the event last year could only manage seventh in her heat and just missed advancing to the final by one spot after finishing 13th overall.
Miller who came into the meet as the number two athlete in his event with a mark of 7.30m, had several problems and could only register a disappointing 3.90m to finish 23rd overall out of 24.
The hot favourite to land a middle distance double in Class Three, KC's Julius Itubo, clocked the fastest time in th 1500m heats. He crossed the finish line in 4:15.25.
Cavel Nooks of Jamaica College and Nahashon Ruto of Kingston College were the fastest qualifiers from classes Two and One, respectively. Nooks' winning time was 4:16.42 while Ruto clocked 4:07.97.
The stage is set for some exciting semi-final action in the 400m.
Holmwood Technical's Malya McLennon led the way in girls' Class Three with 56.02 ahead of Shay-Jay Davis of Convent of Mercy (Alpha) 56.46 and Shaneil Henry of Hydel, 56.70.
Another Holmwood athlete, Anastacia Hall, was the fastest qualifier in Class Two with 54.56 ahead of Shameika McLean (54.78) of Foga Road High and Maddison Campbell of Holmwood, 54.88.
Darrian Francis of Lacovia High was the top qualifier the boys' Class Three 400m in 51.12 while in Class Two his teammate Nicholas Jones led the way with 48.83.
In Class One Nishawn Walker of Titchfield High clocked 47.59 to win his head. The next fastest qualifier was Makaelan Woods of Jamaica College, 47.60.
Competition on today's second day will start at 9:20 a. m with the semi-finals of the Class Three girls' 400m.
