Whitmore makes happy return to Jarrett Park - Mount Pleasant beat MoBay United in Jamaica Premier League
MOUNT PLEASANT Football Academy's head coach, Theodore Whitmore, said it was significant to secure three points at Jarrett Park, highlighting the historical importance of the venue after the St Ann-based club notched another win in the Jamaica Premier League yesterday.
Caribbean Cup champions Mount Pleasant carved out a narrow 1-0 win over Montego Bay United FC (MBU).
"It is always good coming to Jarrett Park and play. It's a lot of memories, both as a player and now coaching. Coming here this afternoon, and getting three points, for a long time, it's warranted," said Whitmore.
In a thrilling encounter, Mount Pleasant's Raheem Edwards scored the winning goal in the 47th minute in the last game of the year for both teams.
The result leaves MBU in second on 26 points, the same as Racing United. Racing, however, have a superior goal difference.
Mount Pleasant remain fourth with 22 points.
TEAM'S OBJECTIVES
With the Caribbean Cup competition now in the dust, Whitmore said it is important to continue working hard and focus on achieving the team's objectives.
"It is very important that we climb the standings. We were behind on the table with a couple of games. After playing more games, then we should be up where we want with either first or second. We just have to keep working and climbing," said Whitmore.
"Playing in the Champions Cup and not getting first or second in regular season is going to be a problem. The guys are up for the task, so we have to keep pushing to get the desired results," added Whitmore.
Meanwhile, Xavier Gilbert, coach of MBU, said the team's displacement might have been a factor in their performance, and they can only focus on controllable aspects
"We control what we can. Everybody, from the management side have been ensuring that we are in a finer and comfortable place where we can train. I think we are settled, and happy that we've found somewhere and, hopefully, get back to our usual winning ways," said Gilbert.
"I thought we did enough, could and should have gotten something out of the game. But these are the Caribbean Cup champions so we know it wasn't going to be easy. It was a better performance than we did last week," added Gilbert.
In the first half, the game was evenly balanced and it wasn't until the second half that the fireworks began.
Edwards controlled the ball on his thigh from a beautiful assist delivered by Warner Brown, then made a 180-degree turn and fired into the net at the 47th minute.
MBU's Brian Brown, minutes after coming on as a substitute, had an immediate impact with a near-goal encounter.
The home team made every attempt to attack and apply pressure but Mount Pleasant's defensive strategy would leave them with the advantage.
Earlier this season when MBU and Mount Pleasant faced each other, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
