Medals galore for Jamaica at NACAC
Jamaica won another 12 medals on Sunday's final day of the NACAC Senior Championship in the Bahamas to add to the 12 they won the previous two days.
Travis Smikle, Shiann Salmon and Andrew Hudson led the final-day medal haul with gold in the men's discus, women's 400 metres hurdles and men's 200 metres, respectively.
Hudson clocked 19.87 seconds to take the men's sprint event ahead of the US pair of Kyree King, who clocked 20.00 and Josephus Lyles with 20.18. Jamaica's Jazeel Murphy finished outside the medals in fifth with 20.92.
Smikle and Federick Dacres finished first and second for Jamaica in the men's discus. Smikle topped the field with a throw of 62.89 metres. Dacres followed with a throw of 62.79, while Torres Alberto Diaz of Cuba was third with a throw of 62.13.
In the women's 400 metres hurdles final, Salmon stopped the clock in 54.22 seconds for the gold and one-two finish for Jamaica, after Janieve Russell claimed the silver with 54.87. USA's Cassandra Tate was third in 55.62.
Meanwhile, Tajay Gayle, who like Dacres was hampered by injury at the Olympic Games and World Champs and was doubtful for this championship, took the silver medal in the men's long jump with a leap of 7.81 metres.
He was second to William Williams of the USA who jumped 7.89 metres with another Jamaican Shawn-D Thompson third with 7.75.
Adelle Tracey also added silver in the women's 1,500 metres, denying the USA a one-two finish. She finished behind Heather Maclean, who won in 4:04.53 minutes and ahead of Helen Schlachtenhaufen in 4:10.43.
In the relays, Jamaica were second in both the men's and women's 4x400 metres behind the USA.
The women ran 3:26.32 minutes for their silver medal, while the men finished in 3:05.47.
Jamaica also took bronze in both the 4x100 metres sprint relays. In the women's 4x100 metres, Jamaica were third behind the USA and The Bahamas in 43.39 seconds. The USA took the race in 42.35 with the Bahamas second in 43.34.
The men clocked 38.94 seconds for their bronze medal, with the USA winning in 38.29 and Trinidad taking silver in 38.94.
Meanwhile, Natalliah White finished outside the medals in the women's 200 metres, clocking 22.65 seconds for a fourth-place finish behind the USA's Britanny Brown, who clocked 22.35 and Bahamas' Tynia Gaither with 22.41. Jamaica's Ashley Williams was fifth in 23.75
Jamaica's Lloydrecia Cameron was fourth in the women's shot put with a throw of 16.42. The event went to Sarah Mitton of Canada with 20.15 metres, the USA's Jessica Woodard was second with 18.82, and Jessica Ramsey third with 18.74.
The Jamaicans ended the day with three gold, six silver and three bronze medals.
